On their way to Bethel, to build the house of God, Jacob’s pregnant wife, Rachel, in travail before her death, called out and named her son, Ben-Oni, meaning, “son of my affliction.” Jacob later called the baby, Benjamin, which translates to “son of my right hand,” representing a shift from grief to hope, refusing to let past affliction define the child’s identity. It was at Bethel that God told Jacob to grow, multiply, and promised that a nation and a multitude of nations would spring forth from him, including kings who would come forth from his loins.
But before the blessing would come, Jacob was instructed to put away the strange gods that were among then, cleanse themselves, and change their garments. As Christians, we must put away the idols, selfishness, greed, pleasing the flesh, and promoting the ways of man. God instructs us to change our garments and put on the garment of love, forgiveness, and brotherly love. God’s word explains that he is at the helm of the ship as we navigate difficult waters. As we hold fast and obey his word, in due season we will reap precious fruit, just as a mother brings forth a child from the pains of labor and delivery.
“Shall I cause to travail, and not bring forth? shall I cause to bring forth, and shall be barren, saith thy God?” (Isaiah 66:9)
