God warns of judgment for wicked rulers, legislators, judges, and individuals who pervert justice, call evil good, and produce “wild grapes,” i.e., they produce corruption, rebellion, oppression, and injustice, instead of fruitful grapes and righteousness. This perversion of justice emboldens them by giving them rewards or material gains. God gives a stark warning of judgment to those who allow personal gains or bribes to blind their eyes to the truth. The irony is that these bribes and rewards are exchanged to free the guilty, while simultaneously justice is denied and the righteous and innocent are imprisoned or oppressed.
Isaiah Chapter Five is a wake-up call. Moral perversion, moral collusion, silence, calling evil good, and spiritual wickedness in high places will not continue unchecked according to God’s word. However, there is still hope. We serve a God who leaves the ninety-nine, to go after the one lost sheep no matter how God-forsaken and wretched they are. God is a gentleman, and he will not force anyone to repent. As Noah gave the warning, at some point the door of the ark will close and desolation and divine wrath will follow. I pray that he who has an ear will hear what the Spirit says and repent before the door is closed.
“Which justify the wicked for a reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him.” (Isaiah 5:23)
