King Solomon wrote that there is nothing new under the sun. The first war recorded in the Bible is the Battle of the Kings in Genesis 14. The first recorded war in history took place around 2700 BC to 2600 BC between the Sumerians and the Elamites. Earlier prehistoric violence, based on archaeological findings, occurred in Sudan, Africa, 13,400-12,000 BC. Suffice it to say, the Word tells us that there will always be wars and rumors of war— that’s because of the warlike nature of man that chooses sin over obedience to God’s word.
Fast forward to 735-732 BC, our divine provincial God said that in the midst of war, to fear not. He told Isaiah that two kingdoms warring against each other were smoking firebrands, i.e, two stumps of smoldering logs that would burn out. God said further not to fear because he promised to send his son, Immanuel, born of a virgin, to take away the sins of the world, the warlike nature of man. I thank God for his divine providence over all mankind, nature, time, and the world. I am amazed at his omniscience and his promise to send a savior and to reserve a divine stump that would emerge from the ashes of war. “Take heed, and be still: fear not… for the two tails of these smoking firebrands…Thus saith the Lord God, It shall not stand, neither shall it be…Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and she shall call his name Immanuel [God with us].” (Isaiah Chapter 7:4-14)
